For this blog post, I wanted to share 10 unsexy things that I do every day that help me to look and feel my best at 63. These are the boring everyday things, like flossing your teeth, that seem mundane but do make a big difference in how I look and feel. Over the years I’ve made separate videos on some of these unsexy things, I linked those videos below for those who want more in depth explanations.
1. SLEEPING ON MY BACK
The first unsexy thing that I do is sleep on my back with my head elevated. To accomplish this I use a 10 inch Sleeping Wedge and stack a couple of regular bed pillows on top of it. I have done a How to Sleep on Your Back video about how I trained myself to sleep upright since it’s not a very natural sleeping position. So this is definitely unsexy, but it has been such a game changer in my life for a few different reasons. The first thing is fewer wrinkles and less deep wrinkles on my face and on my chest. In my early 50’s I had developed a deep, Y-shaped wrinkle on my chest from sleeping on my side. Since sleeping on my back the wrinkle has completely gone away along with some of the deeper wrinkles I was getting on my nasolabial folds.
The second thing is more restful and comfortable sleep. When I used to sleep on my side I would toss and turn all night due to hip and shoulder pain. Now that I’ve been sleeping on my back I’ve noticed significantly less pain and therefore minimal readjusting throughout the night. I never wake up with a sore shoulder or a sore neck, and I am definitely in a better mood during the day when I’ve had adequate sleep. The third improvement I noticed once I started sleeping upright on my back was my eyes. Under my eyes is less baggy, the skin doesn’t sag as much as it used to, and there is significantly less fluid retention. It’s also helped my hooded eyes to look and be less hooded. Overall my eyes look so much more youthful and I don’t look tired when I wake up.
2. RED LIGHT THERAPY
Unsexy thing number two is first thing in the morning when I open my eyes instead of grabbing my phone and scrolling social media, I grab my red light therapy mask and I put that on instead. The treatment time is 10 minutes so I take that time to organize my thoughts for the day and determine what I want to get done. It’s a nice, relaxing way to start the day and it’s so good for my skin. The mask that I’m using right now is the Current Body 2 Mask which is made from super soft silicone, has very accurate light bulbs, and the right amount of intensity. I also like to treat the neck and chest area so the mask I use for that is the iRestore Neck & Chest Mask. This one also has a ton of light bulbs and is much larger than other neck and chest masks on the market.
When I first started using a red light mask about five years ago, I started seeing the difference in my skin in 2 weeks. Within a month, other people were seeing the difference and started asking me, “What are you doing? Have you been in for a treatment?” So, then I did a full Red Light Masks video explaining what it was, how it worked, and reviewing some different masks. To summarize briefly red light therapy helps to bring blood flow to the skin, even out skin tone, diminish the look of pores, reduces discoloration, and increases collagen production and collagen density. For more in depth information on red light therapy you can read my new blog post where I explain the specs and rate all of the red light masks that I’ve tested.
3. EYE DROPS
Another unsexy thing that I do is I put in hydrating eye drops twice a day, every day without fail. Being my age and postmenopausal, I use eyelash growth serum and I wear contact lenses most days, both of which dry out my eyes. So, my eye doctor recommended these specific eye drops to me about 10 years ago, and I’ve been using them ever since. They’re the Retaine Eye Drops which are mineral oil-based eye drops. I have tried all the other types of eye drops and nothing works for me as well as these ones. I put them in when I get up in the morning and when I go to bed at night, and they keeps my eyes really comfortable, soothed, and moisturized.
4. JUMPING & WEIGHT TRAINING
The fourth unsexy thing I do is my jumping and strength training for healthier bones. Once women are post-menopausal they start leeching bone much more quickly than their bodies can rebuild bone, so osteopenia and osteoporosis are big issues for us older women. Luckily, there’s been a lot of research coming out of ways that you can fight it beyond just taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Impact exercises, such as heel drops, marching/stomping your feet, and jumping, are very important for redeveloping bone density.
I started doing this jump training on my 40” Rebounder a couple of years ago and I also do strength training with heavier weights. I also wear a Weighted Vest sometimes when doing things around the house and while that is definitely unsexy, I got to say it does make me feel better in my body. I love how my arms look when they have muscle tone so much better than when they don’t, I love how my clothes fit, and everything else about being in shape. So these are things that I am happy to do if it means I’ll not only feel good in my body, but I’m also protecting my body from an osteopenic fall or fracture.
5. KNEE BRACE
Unsexy thing number five is wearing a Knee Brace, which goes hand in hand with number four because this allows me to be able to do my jumping exercises and Peloton. I don’t know how much cartilage I have left, probably not a lot, and because of this my knees tend to ache after I work out. It’s not anything that’s so bad that I’ve needed to have them looked at by a doctor, but I feel like the knee braces that I wear really, really help. I absolutely love my knee braces, they work like a charm to eliminate that pain and I highly recommend them if this is something you struggle with as well.
6. SKIN PROTECTION
Unsexy thing number six encompasses four different things, but I put them all under one umbrella, which is sun protection. I like being out in the sun just as much as the next guy, but it does cause 90% of skin’s aging, as well as skin cancer which can be deadly. After being a sun worshipper for the first 45 years of my life, I decided that even though I love being out in the sun, I don’t need that radiation directly on my skin every single day. So I started wearing sunscreen every single day, all year round on any exposed face or body parts.
While there are so many sunscreens I love, I’m really excited to share a new one, the Geek & Gorgeous Zero Feel Face Cream. This is an SPF 50 sunscreen with no white cast and a matte finish. It’s one of the first sunscreens I’ve ever tried where I don’t have to put some kind of makeup or powder on over it to take down the shine. It uses sunscreen ingredients that are not FDA approved here in the United States, but they are approved in Europe and the rest of the world. So, outside of the U.S., it’s advertised as Geek & Gorgeous Zero Feel SPF 50. In order to be able to sell it in the United States, Geek and Gorgeous don’t label it as a sunscreen, but the ingredients and formula are exactly the same.
While sunscreen is fantastic sun protection is does degrade over the course of the day, so there’s a few other things I do to keep my skin covered. Just about any time that I’m going to be outside for longer than 5 or 10 minutes, I put on my Wide Brim Sun Hat. I take my dog out for walks four times a day and wear this hat every single time. When I’m doing sports out in the sun, I’ll wear a Full Face Visor that gives me an extra SPF 50.
So often the hands go unnoticed when it comes to UV protection and unfortunately there are so many ways we are aging our hands every day. Like when the sun comes in through the windshield while you’re driving or the UV lamps at the nail salon. So, I’ve started carrying the Abib Airy Sunstick around with me for easy, on-the-go application without the greasy mess of lotion. This feels really nice and silky, not greasy at all, and is such an easy way to prevent the visible signs of aging on our hands. I also keep a pair of UV Protection Gloves in my car that I wear when I’m driving because the sun comes right through the windshield.
I also keep lip sunscreens, specifically the Prequel Lip Visor and the Supergoop Glow Gloss SPF 40 Lip Balm, next to the door or in my purse so that every time I go out, I’m sunscreening up my lips which is another area we tend to forget about. Most of the SPF lip balms taste terrible, feel terrible, and dry out your lips. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried these lip balms and found that they had none of those attributes.
7. FOOT SUPPORT
The seventh thing is very, very unsexy, but has helped me feel so much more comfortable in my body, it’s my Orthaheel Insoles. I had plantar fasciitis a number of years ago that I got from wearing shoes without arch support. I got it in both feet and I could barely walk while I had it because it was so painful. Luckily I did find an easy solution, which was a Sleeping Boot for Plantar Fasciatis.
I wore it for about a week or two on each foot while I slept and it took care of the pain so quickly. But in order to keep the plantar fasciitis from coming back, what I found was that I have to have good arch support in all my shoes. So, I have multiple pairs of these insoles for shoes that don’t have great arch support or need a little extra. These insoles are amazing and so easy to just slip in and out of all my shoes.
8. SUPPLEMENTS
Number eight on my unsexy list is that I take a handful of supplements every single day. I keep them organized in a 7-Day Pill Organizer Box because there are so many. This little box is great because it doesn’t look like a pill box, but it has individual days with a day and an evening compartment.
The supplements that I use are mainly for heart health, bone health, joint health, and skin health. Since I do take so many it’s much easier to go over them in the form of a video. Luckily I have already created a Supplements for Menopause video that goes in depth on all the supplements I take and why I take them.
9. HAIR CHECK
The ninth unsexy thing that I do is I always check the back of my hair before I leave the house for the day. Since I began sleeping on my back my hair gets so mashed against the back of my head and develops a messy, flattened part in the back of my hair. If my roots are gray then it looks double bad.
So, my simple solution for that is I use my WavyTalk Hot Curling Brush to get a little bit of lift in the crown, and then smooth out the back. I then go in with the Kristen Ess Workable Hairspray so that the hair stays in place and doesn’t fall back into the smushed, slept in look.
10. FACE CLOTH
The last unsexy thing is going to be the Wonder Cloth that I use to wash my face every night. This is so inexpensive, but so good at getting my skin super clean, removing all of my makeup and sunscreen from the day. It’s very important that my skin is clean with nothing in the way to obstruct my skin care from absorbing. In addition to working so well, it also gently exfoliates the skin which helps get off any little remnants of mascara or waterproof eyeliner around the eyes. I have about 10 of these and I use one for two or three nights and then throw it in the wash.
