I wanted to share my favorite anti-aging skin care products that actually work, but that won’t break the bank. I know money is tight for a lot of people right now, and so it’s hard to spend a ton of money on your skincare. The good news about skincare is that there’s such a huge variety and there are so many brands offering great skin care at great prices that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get fantastic skin care. I’ve gone around the house and collected all of my favorite affordable skin care products from face washes to retinoids, vitamin C serums, alpha hydroxy acids, all the things that are the known best ingredients for anti-aging your skin. I’m so excited to share these products with you all, so let’s get right into it!

RETINOIDS

Retinoids are considered to be the most researched and effective anti-aging skin care on the market. They help to increase collagen production in the skin, reduce wrinkles and age spots, smooth your skin, and promote the dead skin on the surface to turn over faster, revealing brighter, softer skin. Some retinoids will be more effective than others, and with that varying effectiveness comes different levels of irritation. Retinoids are only to be used at night and you need to use a sunscreen during the day if they are part of your skincare routine. The gold standard retinoid is Tretinoin, but that is available only by prescription and tends to be a little bit more expensive. For this blog post, I’m going to stick with over- the-counter (OTC) retinoids that are what I consider to be the best and the most effective for a reasonable price.

OTC ADAPALENE

The first over-the-counter retinoid is called Adapalene, which can be found in Differin Gel. This is a newer retinoid that with consistent use has been shown to reduce wrinkles, reduce skin roughness, and even skin tone. This is the strongest retinoid that you can get over the counter at the drugstore, and like other retinoids, it can be very irritating, however it is slightly less irritating then Tretinoin. When starting Adapalene, I recommend starting out slowly – don’t put it on every single night and just assume your skin is going to be fine with it because it might have a strong reaction.

Differin Gel

OTC RETINALDEHYDE

The next most effective retinoid that you can get over-the-counter is going to be Retinaldehyde. Unlike Tretinoin, Retinaldehyde is not usable by your skin as it is, and your skin must convert the Retinaldehyde into Retinoic Acid. This conversion makes it slightly less effective than the previously mentioned retinoids, however it still does produce modest results. Once converted to Retinoic Acid it will reduce wrinkles, improve collagen production, and all the other things retinoids are meant to do.

Naturium Retinaldehyde Serum 0.10%
Naturium Retinaldehyde Serum 0.05%

Retinaldehyde is the active ingredient in both the Naturium Retinaldehyde Serum 0.10% and the Naturium Retinaldehyde Serum 0.05%. The main difference between these two products is the strength of the Retinaldehyde, so if you’re someone with really sensitive skin the 0.05% might be a better fit for you than the 0.10%.

Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 0.2% Retinaldehyde Serum
Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 0.1% Retinaldehyde Serum

Another Retinaldehyde product I enjoy is the Geek & Gorgeous A-Game Retinaldehyde Serum which comes in two strengths, 0.10% and 0.20%. I really like when a product comes in multiple strengths because you can start with a lower strength and work your way up. Geek and Gorgeous is a great, well-priced skincare resource for both my American and European viewers. They make a lot of really well-formulated products that are available in both the United States and Europe.

ALPHA HYDOXY ACIDS (AHAs)

Alpha hydroxy acids are an umbrella term that encompasses quite a few different individual ingredients. Some are more effective than others, but the more effective they are, the more irritating they can be. Alpha hydroxy acids are exfoliants that help to thin the outer layers of skin, promote dead skin cell turnover, increase collagen production, and hydrate the skin by drawing water to the surface. Just like retinoids, it’s always recommended that you use a sunscreen with them.

GLYCOLIC ACID

The most effective AHA is Glycolic acid because its small sizes allows it to better penetrate the skin, but this means it’s also the most irritating. You can find Glycolic acid in lots of different products, but the two that I recommend are the Alpha Skincare Renewal Essential Lotion and the Naturium 10% Glycolic Acid Gel. Both of these are leave on gels made up of 10% Glycolic acid. What I especially love about the Alpha Skincare is that they are very transparent about the pH level of all their products, and all are a pH of 4. AHA’s are most effective at a specific pH range to get into your skin and do what they need to do, and a pH of 4 falls within that range.

Naturium 10% Glycolic Acid Gel

LACTIC ACID

With my sensitive skin I’ve never been able to use Glycolic acid daily, so I use Lactic acid instead. Lactic acid is a larger molecule so it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply as Glycolic acid, however it is still effective. It also increases ceramide production in the skin which helps to lock in moisture and keep irritants out of the skin. Two of my favorite lactic acid products are Angie’s Actives All-In Vitamin C + Lactic Loaded Serum and The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%. Unlike The Ordinary’s products, which generally have one, maybe two, hero ingredient per product, the way that I made my skin care was loading as many ingredients as I could into each bottle. So in my All-In Serum there are seven active ingredients including Lactic acid, Vitamin C, Ascorbic acid, Resveratrol, Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, and Ferulic acid. It’s also formulated at the right pH for all of those ingredients to work in your skin giving you the equivalent of three or four different skincare products for $29.

VITAMIN C

There are many different Vitamin C’s on the market, including Ascorbic acid, which is the most effective, and Vitamin C Esters, which are less effective. Your skin recognizes Ascorbic acid in a very similar way to how your skin recognizes Tretinoin, it can use it right away without having to convert it first. All the other versions of Vitamin C are stabilized with other molecules added on that surround the Vitamin C molecules, making absorption into the skin more difficult. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to protect your skin from damaging oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by things like sunlight, pollution, and stress that generate free radicals in your skin. Free radicals destroy your collagen, but Vitamin C can neutralize those free radicals and therefore protect the collagen and elastin in your skin.

ASCORBIC ACID

Ascorbic acid is a precursor for collagen production meaning your skin can’t make collagen without it. However, there is a major issue when it comes to storing Ascorbic acid because it degrades from exposure to light and air. Luckily, with the use of helper antioxidants, lower pH, and opaque packaging, Ascorbic acid can be temporarily stabilized for extended use. This is exactly what I did with my Angie’s Actives All-In Vitamin C + Lactic Loaded Serum.

Angie’s Actives All-In Vitamin C + Lactic Loaded Serum

I added Ferulic acid and Vitamin E to a light proof airless pump to stabilize the 20% pure Ascorbic acid in the product for much longer than a lot of the other Vitamin C serums out there. In addition to being stabilizing, Ferulic acid and Vitamin E also have their own anti-aging effects on the skin. My All-In Serum also contains Resveratrol, 1% Hyaluronic acid, and 10% Lactic acid which all help to anti-age and soothe your skin.

Dr. Brenner C Serum with Vit. E, Ferulic & Hyaluronic Acid
Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum

The least expensive Vitamin C serum I recommend Dr. Brenner C Serum, which retails for $23.99 per ounce. This formula is going to be the closest to the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic formula, that costs $185 an ounce. My other longtime favorite is the Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum which is 20% Ascorbic acid and also contains the Ferulic acid, Vitamin E, and Hyaluronic acid for the stabilization. This product is generally around $27.95 per ounce.

PEPTIDES

This is another category that is more of an umbrella term because there are so many different peptides. There are a couple of peptides that I really have focused on in my skincare routine over the last 14 years because they are great for building collagen. Those are the Matrixyl peptides which include Matrixyl, Matrixyl 3000, and Matrixyl Synthe 6, and these have the most research behind them showing that they work. The research also shows that peptides are dose dependent, meaning in order for them to work effectively there needs to be a decent concentration of them in the product. The other two popular peptides are Copper peptides and Argireline, but I feel they don’t work as well as the Matrixyls so I’m not willing to pay a lot of extra money for them.

ANGIE’S ACTIVES

The peptide product that I like the most is my Angie’s Actives Active8 Peptide + Antioxidant Loaded Lotion. It has very high concentrations of both Matrixyl 3000 at 8% and Matrixtl Synthe 6 at 2%. Most other companies will have very small concentrations of these peptides, usually at about 1% or 0.50%. So you’re going to get a lot more bang for your buck with my peptide lotion than with another brand.

Angie’s Actives Active8 Peptide + Antioxidant Loaded Lotion

All of the other ingredients that are in the Active8 Lotion are listed right on the label. In addition to the two peptides, this also contains Ceramides, Niacinamide, Glycerin, Hyaluronic acid, CoQ10, and green tea. This product also retails for $39 for a 1 ounce bottle and $59 for a 1.7 ounce bottle making it very affordable.

TIMELESS

My other two favorite peptide products are the Timeless CoEnzymeQ10 Serum and the Timeless Matrixyl Synthe 6 Serum. The CoQ10 serum contains CoQ10 plus 8% Matrixyl 3000 and the Synthe 6 serum contains 2% Matrixyl Synthe 6 as well as Hyaluronic acid and Aloe. These are both great double duty products because they each contains at least two active ingredients. Both products retail for $28.95 for a 1 ounce bottle.

GEEK & GORGEOUS

The Geek & Gorgeous Power Peptides is another really good product that contains four different peptides. It has 3% Matrixyl 3000, 2% Matrixyl Synthe 6, 4% Tego Pep 4-17, and an encapsulated Copper peptide. While I personally didn’t see a huge difference in my skin with Copper peptides, I know some people swear by them. Regardless, this is a great serum due to the two Matrixyl peptides in the formula.

COSRX

The last peptide serum is the CosRx The 6 Peptide Skin Booster, which as the name says, has six peptides in it. All six peptides in this formula are Copper peptides and the percentage of each is not clearly listed. I recommend this product to someone who wants to try peptides for the first time because this is easy to work into your skincare routine. Overall it’s a decent product and it is definitely the cheapest per ounce on my list of peptide products.

NIACINAMIDE/CERAMIDES/COQ10

The last three active ingredients I’m always looking for in any anti-aging skincare are Niacinamide, Ceramides, and CoQ10. Niacinamide has extensive research behind it and is considered the workhorse of skincare. It’s a stable antioxidant that helps with collagen synthesis, and reduces the look of enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. Ceramides are fatty lipids that are great for protecting the skin barrier and making the skin bouncy and full. Research has shown that there are three specific ceramides, Ceramide 1, 3, and 6-11, that are the most effective and that they require a helper, such a hyaluronic acid, in order to work in the skin. CoQ10 is another antioxidant that gives your skin energy. This is important because a more energized skin cell can create more collagen, defend and repair themselves better, and be overall stronger.

Niacinamide

  • Stable antioxidant
  • Increases collagen synthesis
  • Smoothes texture
  • Decrease look of pores
  • Fades dark spots
  • Strengthens skin barrier

Ceramides

  • Essential lipids
  • Moisturizing
  • Soothing
  • Protects skin barrier
  • Plumps skin

CoQ10

  • Energizes skin cells
  • Increases collagen production
  • Neutralized free radicals
  • Reduces redness
  • Brightens skin

CONTAINS COQ10

The Timeless CoEnzymeQ10 Serum is one of my long time favorite CoQ10 serums for a few reasons. It’s a lightweight serum so it feels great going on the skin and it’s an effective product with a 2% concentration of CoQ10. This product retails for $28.95 for a 1 ounce bottle, but it’s also available in a 4 ounce bottle for $76.95.

Timeless CoEnzymeQ10 Serum

CONTAINS NIACINAMIDE & CERAMIDES

The CeraVe PM Moisturizing Lotion contains both Niacinamide and Ceramides making it a great moisturizing lotion. This lotion is perfect for night time use because the active ingredients will help restore your skin as you sleep and keep the skin hydrated throughout the night. Unfortunately, how much of each ingredient is not shown on the label, but the Niacinamide is listed fairly high on the ingredient list.

CeraVe PM Moisturizing Lotion

CONTAINS NIACINAMIDE, CERAMIDES, & COQ10

The Angie’s Actives Active8 Peptide + Antioxidant Loaded Lotion contains all three active ingredients, Niacinamide, Ceramides, and CoQ10, in one bottle. Specifically it contains 5% Niacinamide which means this product can be used twice a day and still not be over the threshold of what is going to become irritating to your skin. Generally anything over 10% Niacinamide is going to be irritating to your skin and can cause some flushing or redness. The 8% Ceramide blend used in this formula contains the three most effective ceramides to make sure your skin is receiving all those great benefits.

Angie’s Actives Active8 Peptide + Antioxidant Loaded Lotion

The Active8 Lotion also contains 1% CoQ10 which gives the lotion it’s pale yellow color. This lotion rubs in so beautifully and feels so great on the skin. It’s a soothing formula that helps to strengthen your skin barrier while providing your skin with the added benefits of peptides, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acids. When combined in the same skincare routine as my All-In Serum it creates a complete skincare routine in just two little bottles, saving you both time and money.

SUNSCREEN

As always I need to recommend some sunscreen products if I’m going to be talking about skincare. If you really want to see the active ingredients in your skincare routine work, you also have to protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen is so important for anti-aging skincare, so I’ll be recommending my favorite, affordable mineral and chemical sunscreens.

MINERAL SUNSCREEN

The first mineral sunscreens that I really love and that is affordable is the DRMTLGY Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44. This is a zinc oxide sunscreen that doesn’t have any chemical sunscreen boosters in it. However, there isn’t any white cast because it’s a tinted lotion making it great for the base of a casual makeup look. I recommend this sunscreen to people with drier skin because it’s super moisturizing. The price point is reasonable at $31 for a 2 oz bottle, but you can get it for 20% less when you use code ANGIE20 at checkout. This code can be used any day of the year on any DRMTLGY product, which makes this very, very affordable.

DRMTLGY Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44

The second mineral sunscreen I recommend is the CeraVe Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50. This utilizes a new type of zinc oxide that is more sheer on the skin, so it isn’t tinted but there is also minimal white cast. This can be worn without makeup for those with lighter skin tones, but the white cast will be more apparent on those with darker skin tones. I really like this one because like all CeraVe products, it contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid leaving your skin feeling moisturized and protected.

CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN

There are very few chemical sunscreens that I like because of how irritating I find them to be, however I really enjoy the Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice SPF 50+ PA++++ Sunscreen. This sunscreen has a PA++++ rating, which is the highest rating on the UVA protection scale. UVA are the aging sun rays, so it’s very important to protect your skin from them. For a chemical sunscreen, this doesn’t irritate my skin at all because it uses a lot of the newer chemical filters that are from Europe and Asia. It’s a white, non-tinted lotion that rubs beautifully into the skin. It’s not overly shiny or greasy, and it dries and sets quickly.

CLEANSER

The last category of skincare products I want to touch on are face cleansers. In order for you skincare to work as effectively as possible it needs to be applied to clean skin, making cleansing a very important first step in your routine.

GEL CLEANSER

Recently I’ve really been enjoying using gel cleansers because for so long I had to use foaming cleansers that stripped my skin making it feel dry, tight, and irritated. My two favorite gel cleansers at the moment are the Prequel Gleanser and the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. Both of these gently clean and sooth the skin leaving it feeling so moisturized. These are also two very affordable products – the Prequel is 13.5 ounces for $18 and the CeraVe is 19 ounces for $15.

CLEANSING BALM

In the evening when I want to take off my makeup or tinted sunscreen from the day I do a double cleanse with a balm cleanser followed by one of the above gel cleansers. The most cost effective of the balm cleansers that I like is the Geek & Gorgeous Mighty Melt Cleansing Balm. It’s very effective at breaking up waterproof mascara, waterproof eyeliner, and sunscreen that just won’t budge leaving my skin feeling so clean.
