Favorite Eye Products (If I Had To Pick Just One of Each)
It’s hard to name an all time favorite eye product, there are so many good ones, and so many that I haven’t even tried yet. But, if I was forced to pick just one item from each category of eye product, these are the ones I’d be hard pressed to do without.
Best Under Eye Serum or Cream:
Ok, so I don’t use a dedicated eye cream (I just think they’re a marketing ploy to get us to buy an extra product). Your eye skin needs the same things as the rest of your face, which is a good moisturizer with anti-oxidants. I use Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Serum under my eyes, on my eye lids and all over my face. I also put my moisturizer right on my lids and under eyes too, but I don’t put my anti-aging actives there because they’re too harsh for the skin around eyes, nose and mouth and can cause irritation.
I recently tried a whole bunch of concealers for a comparison video, and the one that came out on top for me was Lorac Touch-Up To Go Pen. I’m fortunate to not have dark circles, so I can use this sheer formula to brighten up and even out my under eye area. Touch-Up To Go Pen contains vitamins A, C, & E and anti-oxidants, and it’s non-drying formula doesn’t settle or crease.
Best Brow Product:
I’ve never “done” my brows until recently, but my brows are getting sparser now that I’m in my 50s and they really do look better and help my eyes look more lively if I fill them in a bit. I love the IT Cosmetics “Your Brows But Better” pencil. It’s one shade works for all but the lightest brows, it’s self-sharpening, and has a convenient spoolie brush on the other end for blending.
A couple of years ago, I would have said Urban Decay Primer Potion, but now that my eye lids are older, freckled, crepey, and sagging they need a different approach to look their best. Now I use and swear by Mac Paintpots, and my favorite is Painterly. These little pots of cream shadow work great as shadow, but they excel as a primer. Painterly is a soft taupey pink that covers over my freckles and sets up my eyelids as a smooth, uniform canvas to apply shadows. It starts creamy, but dries quickly so it doesn’t feel wet or sticky all day. It makes my powder eyeshadow last 12 hours or until I take it off and enhances the color of the eyeshadow.
I like to buy individual eye shadows so I can get soft subtle natural matte colors, and most palettes have a mix that include shimmers and bright colors that I just won’t use. So, the best palette for me is Urban Decay Naked Basics. It has 6 neutral shades that are versatile enough to do every day or evening and smoky looks.
Best Eye Liner:
Soft, creamy, waterproof pencil is the easiest and best eye liner for me. My favorite right now is Smashbox Limitless Eyeliner in Charcoal Gray. It goes on creamy so you can make a smooth line without tugging, but it’s water resistant so you can use it in the water line too. The sharpener in the cap is extra convenient and great for travel!
Best Mascara:
Cover Girl Clump Crusher is my current favorite, It has a small applicator brush, that helps me to poke myself in the eye less (yes, that’s really the reason I like it best)! It doesn’t create the longest or thickest looking lashes, but it coats easily and stays put without flaking or puddling at the outer corners.
Best Eyeshadow Single:
The one I use most is Mac Matte Eyeshadow Single in Blanc Type. It’s a pale bone color that I use almost daily on my lids below the crease. It helps me to fake a crease on my sagging hooded lids by creating brightness right above the lashes. It’s also great for highlighting below the brow. the Mac matte shadows are powders that feel creamy and blend really well.
