Winter is without a doubt the worst time of year for your skin. If you’re suffering with dry, flaky, itchy, irritated, red, uncomfortable skin in the winter, then I’ve got three tips that are going to help you out that will give you the most comfortable, hydrated, bouncy skin that you’ve ever had during the cold winter months!

TIP 1: INVEST IN HUMIDIFIERS

My first tip is something that I think has helped my skin so much more than just about anything else. Tip number one is to invest in a whole house humidifier and a separate humidifier for the bedroom. I purchased this 6-gallon evaporative humidifier and within a day the humidity level in my house went up from about 20% to over 40%.

6-Gallon Whole House Evaporative Humidifier

This humidifier not only got my home’s humidity into the ideal 40 to 50% range, but it also saved me money since it doesn’t need to be professionally installed. All I had to do was assemble it, fill it with water, and plug it in, and because it holds six gallons I only have to refill the water about once a day. This humidifier treats a 3,000 square feet space making it so effective and cost efficient. It’s also very quiet even on the highest fan setting.

4-Gallon Bedroom Evaporative Humidifier

In my bedroom I have this smaller 4 gallon evaporative humidifier. It keeps the air in my bedroom so nice and humidified that while I’m sleeping my skin doesn’t dry out. It’s so quiet and really works perfectly for just one room. I really love that both of these humidifiers don’t have a plume of moisture coming out, so they don’t dampen the floor or furniture around it, like smaller desktop humidifiers.

4.75-Gallon Console Humidifier

I used to have this 4.75 gallon console humidifier, in my living room but it kicked the can last year so I replaced it with the 6-gallon evaporative humidifier mentioned previously. This large console model isn’t the prettiest and it was pretty loud but it really did the job and lasted for over 8 years!

TIP 2: INCORPORATE CERAMIDES

Tip number two is to add ceramides in to your routine. Ceramides are the most abundant lipid in our skin and are really important for keeping our skin’s moisture barrier intact. But our skin produces fewer and fewer ceramides as we age. Fortunately ceramides can be increased from both inside the body (supplements) and from outside the body (topicals).

Oral Ceramide Supplements

One of the best things that I ever started is a phytoceramide supplement. I first started taking them about 13 years ago because I heard they were a facelift in a bottle. After 3 months of taking them, while I didn’t have a facelift from them, what I did have was much more hydrated skin. Ceramide supplements work systemically so they’re going to help the skin all over your body from the inside out. So if you suffer with dry itchy back skin, or flaky hands adding this supplement can really help!

Wheat-Based Phytoceramide Supplement
Rice-Based Phytoceramide Supplement

I take them all year round, just one pill a day, and I noticed a huge difference in my skin. My favorite are the Sports Research Phytoceramides, however these are a wheat-based supplement. So for those of you with a wheat allergy or gluten intolerance, I recommend these rice-based Herbal Nutrition Phytoceramides.

Topical Ceramide Creams

You can also use topical ceramide creams and lotions that work by replenishing ceramide levels from the outside. Below I’ve recommended a few ceramide products that you can incorporate into your everyday skincare routine.

Active8 Peptide and Antioxidant Loaded Lotion

The first product I’m going to recommend is the Active8 Lotion from my brand Angie’s Actives. This is a peptide and antioxidant lotion that contains eight active ingredients, one of which is an 8% ceramide blend. This percentage of ceramides is significantly higher than 90% of other products on the market, making it the most effective way to get ceramides into your skincare routine. It’s a light to medium weight moisturizer, so if you have very dry skin, you might want to layer a thicker moisturizer over it.

Maelove Peptides & Amino Acids Cream

If you have dryer skin and prefer a thicker more emollient cream, then I’d recommend the Maelove Hydro Relief Cream. This cream is very moisturizing and does contain ceramides as well. It has a really beautiful, thick texture that feels very occlusive on the skin. I love to put it on and let it soak in overnight, then in the morning my skin feels super hydrated.

Naturium Plant Ceramide Cream

The third cream on my list of topical ceramides is the Naturium Plant Ceramide Cream. This cream is actually a little bit thicker and a little bit more emollient than the Maelove cream. This is something you’ll want to use if you have super dry, flaky skin because it’s going to really help your moisture barrier.

Prequel Barrier Therapy Cream

The last ceramide cream I’m recommending is the Prequel Barrier Therapy Cream. This cream is a bit more lightweight and can be used on your face as well as your body. This is a really nice cream that does contain ceramides, as well as urea which is both a great hydrator and exfoliant. If you’re interested in a thicker and more balm-like cream for colder weather or extra-dry skin types Prequel also has a new Barrier Therapy Rich Cream.

TIP 3: STAY HYDRATED

Tip number three is to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. I have found that the easiest way to do this is to carry a reusable water bottle with you. My favorite is the Ello Water Bottle, but there are so many reusable water bottles out there, so use the one you like best, because the tip here is hydration.

Ello Reusable Water Bottle

I like drinking water, but drinking any liquid that’s made with water will still be hydrating. And contrary to popular belief that does include coffee and tea. There’s a myth that coffee and tea are dehydrating because they have caffeine and are diuretics. However, that has been debunked and was actually never true. So enjoy that hot cup of coffee or tea this winter and count it towards your daily water intake!
