Back in 2016 I reviewed the Armani Luminous Silk foundation and pretty much hated it. For me the foundation looked very spotty and had settled into wrinkles on my forehead where no other foundation had ever settled. I felt that it was drying to wear throughout the day and it created a lot of skin flakes. I had really high expectations for this foundation since it was priced at $64 a bottle.
However, 10 years later, Armani has reformulated this foundation, so I figured I’d give it another try. Just like I do with other foundation reviews, I’ll show how the Armani foundation looks in both studio and natural lighting, and conduct 5 hour and 10 hour wear tests. For this review I prepped my skin by washing my face, applying my Angie’s Actives skincare, followed by the Healthy Skin Labs Protect SPF 50 Tinted Mineral Sunscreen.
THE ARMANI FOUNDATION
The Armani Luminous Silk foundation is advertised as a silky, non-comogenic liquid foundation that blurs and smooths the skin. It provides 24 hours of wear and hydration, has medium coverage, and a natural glow finish. This foundation has a water and silicone base, contains SD alcohol (drying), but combats this with glycerin and sorbitol to hydrate. Armani also claims that it’s clinically shown to improve the look of skin tone, texture, and luminosity after 14 days. However, their star ingredient that would accomplish this, niacinamide, is very far down on the ingredient list indicating that it’s probably less than 1% of the formula.
The Luminous Silk foundation retails for $69 for the full 1 oz size, and $48 for the 0.6 oz mini. Both sizes come in 44 shades and I picked up the shades 5.3 and 5.5. The color match with the 5.3 shade was okay and a little bit more sallow than I anticipated. While the shade 5.5 was a little more pink the overall color was too dark for me, so for this review I used 5.3.
To apply, I pumped some foundation on the back of my hand, then dotted the product all around my face using my finger. I blended out the foundation on my face with the BK Beauty 109 Brush. I immediately noticed this product had a strong fragrance which is not something I enjoy in my makeup. Once applied the foundation looked like makeup sitting on the surface of my skin and was a little uneven and splotchy.
THE FINISHED LOOK
For the eyeshadow, I used the new Rare Beauty eyeshadow palette. I really liked how beautifully it blended out and that there was hardly any fallout. The mascara is my tried and true L’Oreal Extensionist, and the concealer is my holy grail Lancome Teinte Idole in the shade 210. The other face makeup I used was the Rare Beauty Bronze Stick in shade Happy Soul, the Saie SuperSuede Blush in shade Bella, and the Saie Glowy Gel Highlighter in shade Starglow. I then set my face with the Tarte Smooth Operator Finishing Powder and filled in my brows with the RMS Brow Pencil in shade Blonde. For the lip combo I used the MAC Lipglazer Liner in shade Velvet Teddy and the MAC Satin Lipstick in shade Modesty.
After wearing the finished makeup look for about 10 minutes I noticed the foundation was already settling in my wrinkles. While it was mostly in my smile lines where I usually see settling, there were some wrinkles higher up on my face that were more accentuated than usual. I don’t think this is the most beautiful or the most natural skin-like foundation I’ve ever worn, but it was okay and overall looked fine. I will say I did like how the Armani Luminous Silk foundation looked in natural light much better than in the studio lighting.
5 HOUR CHECK-IN
At the 5 hour check-in on the Armani Luminous Silk foundation I thought it looked fine from a distance. I was pretty happy about this because when I first tested this product 10 years ago it was super shiny in my T-zone and made me look oily and greasy. However, this new formula really settled into wrinkles and was breaking up on the surface of my skin around my nasal labial folds.
It was also pretty worn off on my chin and was starting to wear off on my forehead as well. For something that claims to have 24 hours of wear it was disappointing to see it already wearing off after 5 hours. I have worn this foundation two other times, using different sunscreens as my base, and it still didn’t look good, so the skin prep was not the issue.
10 HOUR CHECK-IN
At the 10-hour check-in the foundation didn’t look terrible, I’ve seen foundations that are much more worn off after 10 hours of wear. While it was wearing off pretty early on at the 5 hour mark, it didn’t wear off much more since then. The most worn off areas were on my chin and on the edges of my nostrils. It was looking a little dry and scaly around my cheeks and crusty by the sides of my nose. I also think this foundation accentuated my upper lip wrinkles.
On the lower half of my face the foundation was so mottled and broken up, I really disliked how this makeup made my skin look. As the day went on it did get a bit shiner through my T-zone, but nothing a little powder couldn’t fix. Overall, it’s nothing to rave about, but also not the worse foundation on the market. It’s definitely not worth the price point and I think there are better foundations that will cost you much less.
FOUNDATIONS I LIKE BETTER
One of my new favorites is the Clinique Vitamin Foundation and I wear it in the shade Light Medium Cool 1. It’s one of the most natural looking foundations I think I’ve ever tried. The coverage is so light, yet it covers up any blemishes I want to hide. It doesn’t settle into wrinkles too much and lasts pretty well throughout the day without getting shiny. Overall a really nice foundation that I highly recommend for those with mature skin.
One foundation I like that is more of a skin tint is the Saie Slip Tint. This product is so beautiful on the skin and has a really luminous finish. I was surprised with how much I liked this foundation when I first tried it because I usually don’t like a luminous finish. I tend to feel oily when a product has luminosity, but the Saie Slip Tint has almost a blurring effect and reflects light in such a gorgeous way. I wear this foundation in the shade Three + Half and the color match is great for me.
Next is the Maybelline Super Stay Lumi-Matte Foundation. This product is perfect for days when you need a long wearing foundation. I’ve worn this for 15 hours and felt flawless throughout the day. This is a heavier, full coverage foundation, so not something I reach for everyday. It’s great for special occasions and it looks beautiful on the skin. It doesn’t accentuate my wrinkles or settle into them as the day goes on. It comes in 24 shades and I wear shade 125 which is a great match for me.
The last foundation I want to recommend is the NYX Make ‘Em Wonder Foundation. This is a really good, full coverage foundation that stays in place very well. It doesn’t get shiny throughout the day or break up on the surface of the skin. I will say this one was difficult to find a shade match for. I first tried the shade 16 natural beige which was too warm for me. I then tried the shade 15 buff and this was a much better match. So, you might have to play around with the shades a little bit to find the right one for you.
