For this blog post I’m going to share my entire hair care routine! This has been requested ever since I got an 8 inch haircut about seven weeks ago. The first video that I wore my hair shorter was a makeup video and the comments were overwhelmed with questions about my hair. So many of you asked if I could do a new hair styling video, what I used to take care of my hair, and what my coloring and cut was. So, I’m going to cover all that and then some in today’s post.
MY HAIR
I want to start this post by giving a little background on my hair as a point of reference. My real hair color is a medium brown, but I have been dying it blonde for the past 20+ years. My hair does have a little bit of a wavy texture and poofiness to it when I let it air dry, and while it is fine there’s a lot of it. I have a lot of cowlicks, especially right in the front near my part and hairline. I also am going gray because I am 63, so I do have gray roots and am at the point where I’m getting my hair colored professionally every 7 weeks.
When I go to the salon, my hairdresser usually does a root touchup and revamps my blonde highlights. The color that she uses for my roots is equal parts 7NN and 7NA with 20 volume. Then she said she does fine baby lights back to back on the top and spaced below. As far as the cut goes, I got it below the shoulders, but above the boobs with some soft layers throughout. I also have some shorter side pieces in the front and those fall just past my chin.
HAIR WASH ROUTINE
I only wash my hair twice a week and for me this is enough for it to stay looking nice. If my hair isn’t looking quite as clean, usually due to a sweaty workout, and I’m not ready to wash it yet, I will use a dry shampoo on it. The dry shampoo that I like to use is the Olaplex No.4D Dry Shampoo. I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos in my days and this is the one that I consider to be the best. It’s easy to use, isn’t white and powdery, smells nice, and actually takes your hair from looking greasy to freshly washed.
Shampoo
On the days that I do wash my hair I use the Oribe Gold Lust Shampoo. This shampoo smells amazing and uses the best surfactants that are really mild, so it never strips your hair. It’s very concentrated, so a little goes a long way, however the first time I used this, I wasn’t getting that much foam or lather. So, I had to develop a special technique for using this shampoo.
I start by really saturating all my hair with water, making sure my scalp is super wet. I then put a quarter size amount into my palm and rub it all over my hands. Next, I place the shampoo where my hair is the dirtiest – along the hairline, on the top, and underneath the back. I really work it into my scalp and roots, essentially giving myself a scalp massage with my fingers. This is also great for bringing blood flow to the scalp, which helps with hair growth. Then, I add a little bit of water and rub it around a little more, which is when the shampoo really starts to foam up and lather. I let it drip down the ends and then thoroughly rinse my hair.
Conditioner
I follow up shampooing with the Oribe Gold Lust Conditioner. This conditioner is so hydrating and leaves my hair so bouncy and with a beautiful shine to it. Like the shampoo it’s very concentrated, so I use a quarter size amount of this too. I rub it between my hands and begin by placing it on the ends of my hair, then work it about 3/4 of the way up my hair.
I really focus on rubbing it through all the strands of hair with my fingers since I don’t comb it while I’m in the shower. Then I wash my body and my face, allowing the conditioner to sit for about 1 to 3 minutes. Right at the end, before I rinse, I’ll flop my hair onto the top of my head to get a little conditioner onto the scalp. Then I thoroughly rinse all the conditioner out of my hair.
Drying & Brushing
Once out of the shower, I use a Turbie Twist Microfiber Hair Towel to dry the excess water from my hair. I use these because microfiber is so much more gentle on your hair than regular bath towels. They come in lots of different colors, they’re super inexpensive, and great for travel. It’s also so easy to use and feels much more secure than a large, chunky towel.
- Place: Bend forward and flip your hair over. Place the wide end of the towel with the elastic loop at the back of your neck.
- Twist: Gather your wet hair inside the body of the towel and twist the fabric firmly from your head down to the end.
- Loop: Flip the twisted tail of the towel back over your head and tuck the end through the elastic loop.
While my hair is up in the towel, I do my skin care, body care, and put on my sunscreen. That takes about 5 minutes, which is enough time for the towel to absorb most of the water. I remove the towel and then take my Wide Tooth Comb and comb through the front of my hair.
RED LIGHT THERAPY
I only comb through the front of my hair because then I use my HairMax Laserband 82 red light device. This laser headband has a bunch of little teeth that rake through and part my hair as I use it. Parting the hair allows the laser light to reach all the way down to the hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. This has helped my hair grow longer and stronger, and I’ve been really happy with the results.
I’ve been using this device for about 10 years now and the quality on it is so good that it still works as good as the day I got it. I like this one a lot because it’s made up of only lasers. Most of the other red light hair devices that you see on the market have a mix of lasers and LED lights. This one has 82 medical grade lasers which are not only more effective than LEDs but also require shorter treatment time. The HairMax treatment is specifically 90 seconds, so I treat the front, top, and back of my head in less than five minutes.
HAIR SUPPLIMENT
The biggest change to my hair care routine since the last time I posted about it, is that I have started taking prescription Minoxidil for hair regrowth from menopausal hair loss. I used to get Minoxidil in the form of Rogaine’s topical hair growth serum, however I never used this one consistently enough to see results. The serum was supposed to be used every day but because it made my hair feel and look so dirty I was only using twice a week on wash days. So, last year I made the switch to oral Minoxidil through Alloy, which is the same company I get my prescription skincare from.
The dose of Minoxidil I take is 0.5 milligrams, which is relatively low. I know some people take a 2.5 milligram dose, but like every prescription the dose will vary from person to person in order to fit their needs. However, I think it is important to mention that with higher doses the chance of side effects, such as unwanted facial/body hair and fluid retention, also increases. Luckily, Alloy works with real doctors to find a treatment plan that works best for you. So far I’ve noticed a pretty big change in the thickness and fullness of my hair. I always had these male pattern balding spots along my hairline, and I feel like those have completely filled in with new hair growth. So, I have been really, really happy with this.
LEAVE-IN PRODUCTS
After I finish with my red light therapy, I apply my leave-in conditioners, heat protectant, and styling products to my hair.
Hair Serum
The first leave-in product I use is the Colleen Rothschild Smooth & Shine Hair Serum. This serum helps to keep my hair from getting frizzy, relaxes my cowlicks, and also detangles my hair. It’s a great product that not only leaves my hair looking great, but smelling heavenly as well. I place one pump of the serum into my hands and rub them together. I then work this through the ends of my hair and up to around my ears, concentrating it mainly to the front and sides of my head.
Heat Protectant
The next product I put on is the Davines Love Smoothing Perfector heat protectant. I’ve been using this product for a few years now and absolutely love it. Not only does it protect my hair from heat damage but it also fights frizz and smooths my hair. I use two pumps and rub it between my fingers. Then I put it over the same places that I put the Colleen Rothschild serum. If I’m only doing a normal blowout and I’m not curling my hair, then these are the two leave-in products I use.
Volumizing Spray
On days when I do curl my hair I usually want a little bit more hold and root lift, so I use a a third styling product which is the Bed Head Queen for A Day Thickening Spray. This is a volumizing spray that has a foamy texture, and because of this I spray it into my hand rather than directly onto my hair. I apply this product the opposite way than I did the other two – I massage it into my scalp and then I work it down the lengths of my hair. Then I comb through my hair to make sure that everything is really well distributed.
STYLING TOOLS
Once my hair is washed, brushed, and all my leave-in products are applied it’s time to style my hair. Depending on the look I’m going for I use certain hot tools and methods when styling.
For Blowouts
If I’m going for a basic, everyday blowout the hot tool I use is the Dyson Airwrap. I start by using the fast dryer attachment and rough dry all around my hair until it’s about 80-85% dry. I try to aim the Airwrap down the hair shaft so it doesn’t frizz up. Then I put on the soft smoothing brush attachment to brush through my entire head and smooth and sleek my hair. This attachment is particularly good at getting those cowlicks to lay flat because the paddle shaped brush really presses the hair straight.
The last attachment I put on is the large round volumizing brush which I use this to lift my roots, add some volume back to my hair, and give my side bangs some shape. And that’s it for my basic blowout, the front pieces have nice shape while the back is pretty much straight. It takes me about 10 minutes and is great for everyday hair.
The other way I like to blowout my hair is with more emphasis on my layering and adding some bend to the ends of the hair. For that I’ll let my hair air dry and then use the WavyTalk Hot Curling Brush to style it. This is basically a hot round curling brush that is great for quickly achieving a nice sleek look. It makes getting that professional blowout look so much easier than having to use a standard blow dryer in one hand and a round brush in the other. I brush it through a section of hair once to smooth it out and then go in again wrapping the hair around the brush in the way I want to style it. This also only takes me about 10 minutes.
For Curling
Another go to hair style I do is beachy waves/loose curls for a more put together look. I start with a basic rough blowout to get everything dry and relatively straight. Then I go in and curl it with my favorite curling wand, which is the Beachwaver S1 Curling Iron. This hot tool is great because you place your hair in the bottom clamp and with the push of a button the barrel spins your hair around it. This allows your arms to be very natural, no reaching all around your head and tiring out your arms and shoulders. This curling iron also comes in a few different colors and sizes, I use the 1 inch.
When curling my hair I use the second heat setting and start with my bangs. I do use this like a normal curling iron on my bangs, holding it upside down and wrapping the hair around, but for the rest of my head I use the clamp and spin method. I’m not one to section out my hair before hand and clip it in place, instead I curl a lower section, then an upper section, and continue this way around my head. It only takes about 10 minutes and once I’m finished, I look it over, curl any pieces I missed, and separate some of the denser curls.
A second curling iron I’ve been using lately is the TYMO Airflow Curling/Flat Iron which has an inner hot flat iron but the outside is rounded and blows out cool air. It’s a really interesting device and my hair comes out very different than when I use the BeachWaver. The TYMO gives a flatter wave pattern and the bottoms are really straight. So, I only use this one to get a very specific look. I use it like a regular curling wand which again only takes me about 10 minutes.
HAIR SPRAY
The final step is hairspray and I use two different hairsprays on my hair. The first one that I use is the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray which is great for creating more texture and volume in the hair, but doesn’t give all day hold. To use this I pick up my hair from above and I spray it underneath. This sends my hair flying all over the place, but to me that’s what creates the beachy, lived-in texture that I like. I’ll then go in with the Kristen Ess Ultra Fine Workable Hairspray and give my hair a quick misting over the top. This is the product that gives me the all day hold that keeps my hair looking great.
