Tired of hooded eye shadow tutorials for mature eyes done on young, supple skin? Then you’re in the right place! I’ve always had hooded eyes, but now that I’m in my 60s, my eyelid skin is loose and sagging at the inner and outer corners. My hood has also lost volume, so now I have two creases instead of one. In this post I’ll explain how I disguise the sagging and the double crease, so my eyes look more lifted, awake, brighter, and less hooded.

PRIME THE EYELIDS

I never do my eye shadow without first applying an eye shadow primer. The About Face Eyelid Primer smooths out my crepey skin and keeps eye shadow from creasing. I apply it directly to my eyelid and blend it by tapping with my finger or using my A505 Shimmer Brush.

FILL IN THE BROWS

Next, I fill in and extend my brows at both ends to help define and frame the eye. I use the RMS Brow Pencil in shade Blonde and fill from above the brow rather than below to create the illusion of a bigger eye. I extend the tail of my brow out rather than down to lift the outer corner. I add a coat of clear Maybelline Super Lock Brow Gel to hold my brows in place all day.

EYE SHADOW TUTORIAL

The Colourpop That’s Taupe Palette is my go to for creating this look because it has buildable neutrals and shimmers that work great to disguise my hood. However, any palette will work as long as it has multiple neutral shades ranging from light to dark and at least one shimmer shade. I use multiple brushes from My 7-Piece Brush Set with BK Beauty to accomplish this look.

To start I use my A502 Crease Shader Brush and the lightest shade (Boa) in the palette, which is slightly darker than my skin tone. I look straight into my mirror and relax my eye. With gentle strokes, I apply it to the sagging skin at the inner corner and at the outer corner above the top crease. From the outer corner I sweep the brush across to connect back to the inner corner. I then dip back into the same shade and apply it to the space between the two creases, being careful not to bring it below the lower crease.

I then add definition with my A504 Detailer Brush and a slightly darker, warm mid-toned matte, which from this palette is shade Pebble Beach. I place the brush at the outer corner of my top crease, press the brush deep into the crease, and follow the curve of my eyeball to the inner corner. Then I draw an angled line from the outer corner of the crease to the outer corner of my eye.

To deepen that definition, I dip into the slightly darker, cooler, matte shade Python and retrace the same arc and outer V from the previous step. I also bring that shade below my lower lashes and connect it to the outer corner in an upward sweep to help lift the sagging outer corner of my eye. After each step, I check the mirror to see if any puffy or sagging areas are still pushing forward, and if so, I add more of the mid-tone matte to help disguise them.

To make the movable lid look lighter, larger, and brighter, I dip into the medium shimmer shade Snake Eyes with my A505 Shimmer Brush and sweep it over the movable lid. Going back to my A504 Detailer Brush, I add a tiny bit of dark matte gray (Rock Steady) at the outer corner and connect it deep in the outer lower crease using a 7 shaped motion.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Eyeliner above the lashes can make the lid look smaller, so I tightline just below the upper lash line using the Essence Extreme Stay & Play Eyeliner in the shade But First Espresso. This is a waterproof, creamy, dark brown liner so it works great when really pressing it into the base of my lashes. I then use a small angled brush to pull out a tiny wing to further lift the eye.

Before & After Applying my Hood Disguising Eye Makeup

To line the lower lashes I use the About Face Eyeshadow Stick in the shade Absolute Ambrosia, which is a medium-toned, shimmer eyeshadow pencil. I finish the look with a coat of Maybelline Sky Tubes Mascara, my new favorite tubing mascara. Doing my eyeshadow this way makes my eyes look bigger and more lifted, my lids less saggy and droopy, and overall gives my eyes a younger, more refreshed appearance.
