The TRUTH About Vitamin C! Is Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate the BEST Form of Vitamin C?
There’s a lot of hype about a new stable Vitamin C ester that’s supposed to be BETTER than the gold standard L-Ascorbic Acid, so let’s look at the science and see if it’s worth it to try!
Video Cliff Notes (watch the video for the full story)
Vitamin C is one of the best anti-aging ingredients you can use for your skin. It’s an antioxidant that protects collagen, prevents free radical damage, lightens discolorations, brightens and reduces wrinkles!
But there are many forms of vitamin C on the market so it can be confusing to choose one especially when all the different forms claim to be “the best”!
Based on the available research (see studies linked below), my preferred form of Vitamin C is L-Ascorbic Acid and it’s the only one I’ll use. It’s the “gold standard” because there are multiple studies showing it works in human skin and because L-Ascorbic Acid is naturally occurring in our skin as a precursor to collagen production. So topping up the skin’s reservoir of vitamin C is easiest with L-Ascorbic acid because it’s already in a usable form that our skin recognizes.
All the other forms of vitamin c are esters that need to be converted by our skin into L-Ascorbic Acid before they can be used and there’s very little research/evidence showing that this conversion actually takes place (see study linked below). That’s true of the newest form of vitamin c called Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate too even though products with it will tell you otherwise.
The problem is that skincare cosmeceuticals is an unregulated industry so companies can make unsubstantiated claims about their ingredients and the average consumer has no idea whether the claims are true or false or backed up by independent research… and as it turns out most of them aren’t.
So IMHO, all of the esters are unproven which makes me reluctant to recommend spending $200 on an ounce of product… I mean for $200 I’d need to see some pretty impressive studies.
Where Vitamin C is concerned I recommend sticking to the one proven ingredient, L-Ascorbic Acid and if you want to try the newest ester I just wouldn’t spend a fortune on it. So I’ve listed my favorite L-Ascorbic Acid based serums below along with some Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate serums that are reasonably priced if you’re interested in trying one of them.
