For this post I did an all new drugstore makeup try on and wear test. The makeup includes a new foundation, lip liner, and lip gloss from Revlon’s PhotoReady line, as well as an eyeliner from their ColorStay line. Also, a new concealer, bronzer, and blush from E.L.F. in their Soft Glam line. Maybelline released a new tubing mascara and I also reviewed some new liquid eyeshadows from About Face. I put the makeup to the test on my more mature, less than perfect skin by doing an all day wear test. I show the makeup up close in studio light, natural light, and outdoor bright sunshine, and after 5 and 9 hours of wear. So, if you love a good, thorough, all drugstore makeup try on and review, this is the post for you.
THE MAKEUP LOOK
Before any makeup look I always do my skin prep, which includes my Angie’s Actives skincare – Active8 Lotion and All-In Serum. Then on top of that, I add my favorite tinted mineral sunscreen which is the Healthy Skin Lab Protect SPF 50. The combination of these products leaves my skin exfoliated, super hydrated, and also protected from the sun.
Foundation & Concealer
The first new drugstore product I tested was the Revlon PhotoReady Lift & Fill Skin Tint foundation in the shade 120 Light Medium. The packaging has a twist off cap and a thin nozzle to dispense the foundation. The consistency wasn’t super thin or watery and it does have a bit of a funny fragrance in my opinion. I dotted the makeup around my face and then used the BK Beauty 101 Brush to blend it into my skin.
Off the first impression I was not loving this foundation, it was very sheer yet went on streaky and had a metallic sheen to it. I added more in some areas, like my forehead, and the skin there ended up looking very mottled. From a distance it’s not so bad but in my 30X Magnifying Mirror it really did not look good. This foundation claims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in just 4 weeks with stevioside to target fine lines and squalane to visibly plump and hydrate skin. While good ingredients, the amount in the foundation is not enough to actually give you the results that they’re claiming.
I then applied the E.l.f. Soft Glam Concealer in the shade 25 Light Neutral under my eyes and blended it out using my A506 Concealer Brush. I feel like my under eyes are looking so tired lately from waking up super early in the morning and I have to say this gave me really solid coverage. This concealer blended out beautifully, it made my under-eyes look smooth, and it was overall a really pretty concealer.
Bronzer, Blush, & Powder
Next I tried out the E.l.f. Soft Glam Stick Bronzer in the shade Fair, which is the lightest shade. I don’t like when a bronzer is too warm, but this one had the opposite problem and was actually looking too gray. While it did go one nice and creamy, I could not get past the gray color and was so bummed that I chose the wrong shade for me. I instead used another drugstore product which was the Essence Soft Touch Bronzer in the shade 10 Whipped Buttercup, which was a much better color. I applied this bronzer with the Nikki LaRose N19 Brush from BK Beauty. This brush has a stiff, angled edge that is great for those sharp, straight contour lines along the sides of the nose, below the cheek bones, and along the jawline.
For the blush, I used the E.l.f. Soft Glam Stick Blush in the shade Pink On It. This blush is a solid stick that has a creamy finish, so I applied it directly to my cheek and then blended it out using my A507 Angled Blush Brush. The blush was a super pretty color and blended out so easily. It was pretty sheer however this makes it a really good buildable blush for those who don’t like super pigmented products.
I didn’t use a new setting powder because I have found my holy grail which is the Catrice Soft Blur Setting Powder. This still has the drugstore price tag and retails for $9, which always amazes me because it’s so good. I used my BK Beauty 108 Precision Powder Brush and pressed it under my eyes, which makes my eye bags look half the size. The nice thing about this powder is that it doesn’t make the makeup look heavy or cakey, and gives a really solid matte finish.
Eyeshadow & Liner
The eyeshadows I used for this look were two of the About Face Matte Fluid Eye Paints in the shades Smell B4 Rain and Capulets. I tried the first shade, Smell B4 Rain, and it was also looking so gray on me so I tried taking it off and it would not budge. I didn’t want to mess up the rest of the look by going in with makeup remover, so, I used the warmer shade, Capulets, and ended up making what I thought was a decent eyeshadow look. I got to say, once this is dry and set, it is staying in place, making it really great makeup for the summer. It also didn’t make my eyelids look super creased or crinkled, and actually gave a smoothing effect.
For the eyeliner, I tried the Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in the shade 213 Navy. I first did a tight line on my upper waterline and then used it on my lid as top liner as well. This eyeliner gave pretty good color payout and glided on so easily. It stayed in place on my waterline and overall I thought it was a nice product.
Lashes & Brows
Next, I tried the new Maybelline Sky Tubes Mascara which I was just so excited about because I love a good tubing mascara. I put one coat of mascara on each set of my eyelashes and it went on very silky. It had made my lashes look longer and more curled without clumping them together. A good mascara will keep your lashes separated and I was so happy this one did that.
I also didn’t get a new brow product, so I used my tried and true Maybelline Superlock Tinted Brow Glue in the shade Taupe. In my opinion this is the best makeup for your eyebrows because it not only gives them a nice tint but also keeps them in place all day long.
Lip Liner & Gloss
The last part of this makeup look was the lip combo and for that I used two new products from the Revlon PhotoReady line. I started with the Revlon PhotoReady Instant Blur Lip Liner in the shade Dewey. This was very different from other lip liners that are usually a fine, pencil-like point, because this was so big and chunky. I would probably just put this on by itself because it’s so creamy and felt nice on my lips. However, I wouldn’t categorize it as a lip liner.
Lastly, I applied the Revlon PhotoReady Instant Plump Serum Lip Gloss in the shade Lip Floaties. This lip gloss smells minty and gave me that plumping tingle without it being overwhelming. It felt really nice going on and the shade was so, so pretty. I really liked this lip gloss, but I’ll let you decide if this combo was really plumping or not.
THE FINISHED LOOK
Here’s the finished makeup look! Overall I was pretty happy with most of the products I tried, but still wasn’t loving the Revlon Skin Tint at this point. I thought the E.l.f. Concealer looked really good, and I was really liking the lip combo. The Maybelline Mascara was pretty promising, and I was surprised at how much I liked the About Face Eye Shadows.
Looking at the makeup up close, the foundation was a little patchy on my skin and still looked mottled on my forehead. However, the rest of my face looked nice and smooth except for some settling in my smile line wrinkle. The under eye concealer was looking really good, it wasn’t settling into my wrinkles, crows feet, or at the inner corners of my eyes. The blush was very, very subtle, so if you like a heavier blush look you’d have to apply a few layers. The lip combo is so very pretty, I was really loving the color mix of the liner and gloss and it felt great on. I liked the mascara and eyeliner a lot too.
I was so pleasantly surprised at how the foundation looked in both natural light and direct sunlight. It was actually fairly smoothing on my pores and texture, and I thought it looked nice and natural on the skin. So far I was liking everything, but I was eager to see if this look would hold up and last the whole day.
5 HOUR CHECK-IN
At the 5 hour check-in all I could say was wow! This makeup was still looking really, really good. This is the point when the foundation was really starting to grow on me because it was looking so good and skin-like. It was also still in place everywhere, usually at this point I’ve lost some coverage around my nose, but this foundation was still on! Both the blush and bronzer looked good and hadn’t faded, which was nice since the blush was subtle to begin with. The under eye concealer did look a little bit dry under each eye, but the coverage was still in place. So, if you have dark circles, this concealer definitely keeps them covered for a long time. The mascara was also looking great, there was not a single flake or smudge in sight.
I did feel like the foundation oxidized a bit because it was looking a little tanner than I would like. If I was going to wear this in the winter, I would probably have to get a different shade, but otherwise I was liking it a lot. The setting powder really took the shine down and made it much more wearable for me. While not 100% matte, the powder was still reducing the foundation’s original metallic shine, even after 5 hours of wear. The only thing that was worn off was the lip combo, but my lips still felt moisturized and hydrated which I liked.
9 HOUR CHECK-IN
At the 9 hour check-in I was so happy because the makeup hadn’t crashed and burned – it was still looking great! While I wasn’t a huge fan at the begin of this try on, I ended up liking the Revlon PhotoReady Skin Tint. It’s a really nice sheer skin tint foundation that is very skin-like and not at all drying. For 9 hours of wear I think it stayed in place very well, with only a little bit of redness coming through around my nose. The thing that I don’t love about it is that it contains mica which gives it that really metallic shine. However, once I powdered it, I didn’t think it looked too bad. Overall, I think this is a good foundation for summertime or casual all day wear.
The E.l.f. Soft Glam Concealer looked really smooth when I first put it on, but as the day went on it started looking more and more dry. However, the coverage was still in place after 9 hours of wear, so I liked it from that standpoint. I would recommend this to someone with oily under eyes, but if you’re like most mature women and your skin is getting drier, I don’t think you’re going to like how this looks.
The E.l.f. Soft Glam Stick Blush was really pretty when first applied and even though it was very sheer, I can still see it on my cheeks after a full day. If you’re looking for a very natural looking blush, I would recommend this one as it was also so creamy and easy to work with. I probably would have enjoyed the E.l.f. Soft Glam Stick Bronzer if I had bought it in the right color. The Essence Soft Touch Bronzer which was the bronzer that I did try, had pretty good wear time. The shade was a good fit for me and it didn’t stand out on my face and look really obvious, which I like in a bronzer.
Of course, the Catrice Soft Blur Setting Powder is a product I already know that I love because it truly works so well. It really helped to matte the foundation and reduce the look of my under eye puffiness. I love it that it comes in shades as well as the translucent and for only $9 the price point can’t be beat.
I really liked the About Face Liquid Eye Shadows because they were so easy to work with. They made my eyelids look smoother than they are, and they didn’t become dry or crusty throughout the day. The eyeshadow didn’t crease, it didn’t moved around, and the color didn’t fade either.
The Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner wore fairly well on one eye, but had kind of rubbed off on the other. On the good eye it was still on the waterline and in place above the lashes. The bad eye it was half gone on the waterline and above the lashes. Maybe I rubbed the one eye and didn’t realize it? From a distance it looked like the eyeliner was still in place, but if you want perfect all day liner, there are definitely better products than this.
The Maybelline Tubing Mascara was the big winner for this drugstore makeup try on and wear test. The brush is nice and small, putting on just the right amount of mascara. It gives the lashes that nice silky, separated, curled look, and it adds both length and volume. It stayed in place all day, without flaking or smudging. I noticed that I did get some mascara onto my eyelid after I put it on, and I was able to easily wipe it away with a Q-tip. I really, really love this mascara.
The Revlon PhotoReady Lip Liner was really pretty, but I don’t think that I’m going to reach for this as a lip liner again. I’ll probably just put it in my handbag to use on a daily basis as a lip tint. It’s a really pretty color and goes on really easily. Then the Revlon PhotoReady Lip Gloss I liked a lot. The color on this was really pretty and it was such a long lasting, hydrating serum. I liked both separately and together as a lip combo. I can’t say it did much as far as plumping my lips, but I did like how it felt.
